Casa Dani is located in the beautiful surroundings of Tomar in the province of Santarem, just over an hour’s drive from the capital Lisbon. Nature begins in our backyard and in 10 car minutes you are in this traditional and warm-hearted city. From your personal terrace you will be warmly welcomed every day by the sunrise that colors the whole area orange. During the day, the blue sky invites you to discover everything of Portugal and especially what Tomar has to offer you. You can easily visit various river beaches, waterfalls and flower fields from here.

Tomar is an enchanting city where the former influence of the Knights Templar is still evident. Through small streets, past cozy houses and beautiful facades you can, after a break at a delicious coffee shop, visit the Convento de Cristo on top of the hill. This monastery is the city’s calling card. Dated from the 12th century, this building was a progressive structure filled with architectural and cultural treasures. From here one can choose to go deeper into the beautiful countryside to the Aqueduto, for example, or return into the cozy city. Tomar is not just living in the past but today there are plenty of cultural treasures to discover.

One of Tomar’s biggest festivals is the Festas Dos Tabuleiros. Once every four years, every street is decorated with handmade paper decorations. For ten days, Tomar fills with parades, church services, music and dance performances. This celebration is a must-see once in a lifetime event. For the art and culture enthusiast, Tomar also has several connecting festivals each year. Think of the Tomar Jazz Festival, zêzere Arts or the Art’in Rua – Tomar Street Arts Festival. Wondering what local festivals are happening during your stay? Gerda & Maarten will gladly advise you.

Fatima wandelpad

Casa Dani is also the perfect stopover for one of the pilgrimages to Fatima or even further to Santiago. The route to Fatima, Caminho de Fatima, runs practically through our backyard. Throughout the season we see hikers walking this spiritual route or just enjoying the beautiful nature. This route starts in Lisbon and continues through 7 other cities to Fatima, with a total distance of 178 Kilometers. From Tomar it is another 29 Kilometers to Fatima.

Tomar aquaduct

In the immediate vicinity of Tomar, the Aqueduto is not to be missed, this impressive 17 century piece of architecture is a real eye-catcher that is not as popular as it should be. For the best views, walk over the 30-meter-high top of the aqueduct and spot your next activity in advance. There are plenty of hiking trails, picnic spots, river beaches and nature parks in the area. Can’t get enough of Portugal but already know all the streets of Tomar by heart? Then visit one of the other nearby famous places such as Fatima, Obidos or the beaches of Nazaré. Or spend a day shopping in Leiria when the weather is not so good. All these places can be reached within an hour from Tomar.
